Mux Mool's Skulltaste is a sprawling epic of an album, darting between genres with a rapacious hunger for new beats and genre-mashing electronics. This torrid sequence takes in Flying Lotus style hip hop one moment ('Hog Knuckles', 'Dandelion') and garish neon disco ('Enceladus') the next, taking in brilliantly crafted synthcore instrumentals along the way. The laser beam melodies and vocoded jumble of 'Death 9000' sound a little like a hi-fi take on the sort of Betamax-chewing new wave of someone like Dylan Ettinger, while other highlights tread a very different path - 'Morning Strut' has its foundations in good old fashioned sampling, while 'Crackers' goes all out for cartoonish, yammering techno complete with over-compression and gaudy synth arpeggios. All this, plus the digital edition comes with five bonus tracks....

A cross-genre selection of electronics from Mux Mool, shifting between the mock Italo disco of 'End Guy' (which, it has to be said, has a whiff of 'The Final Countdown' about it) to the brash, vocoded big-beat of 'Merlinfist!' without batting an eyelid. Better yet is 'Eagle Fantasies' which slips into a hip hop production that's very much of the Dabrye One/Three school, but restless as ever disco and house influences start to take over again for 'B'Genius' and '2muxLUV'. Finally, 'Teal Trim' might well supply the finest moment on the EP, though it's buried as a kind of miniature bonus beat, tucked away after several minutes of silence following the main track. This added on extra is a blissful bitcrushed boom-bap riff that really could have done with a prominent place on the tracklist.
